GRE 2024 General Test Curriculum

The content of the GRE exam emphasizes the cognitive abilities necessary for success in graduate, business, and law programs. The assessed skills are not confined to any particular discipline but hold universal significance.

The GRE 2024 general test is composed of three sections

1. Verbal Reasoning: Reading and understanding words

This part mostly has questions about reading passages, filling in missing words, and finding similar meanings. Understanding Passages. You'll read 10 passages and answer questions with multiple-choice answers.

  • These questions are like a test to see how well you understand and get meaning from different kinds of reading that students in advanced studies encounter. They check if you can:
  • Get what words, sentences, and paragraphs mean and how they're connected.
  • Tell apart the main points from the not-so-important ones, and figure out what's missing.
  • Summarize the passage and make decisions about it.
  • Find out what the writer is assuming and get their viewpoint.
  • See the strong and weak sides of a given opinion.
  • Filling in Blanks
  • This tests your skills in understanding, judging, and thinking. It involves leaving out important words in a short passage, and you have to fill them in.
  • Finding similar meanings
  • You'll see a sentence with a blank space. You need to pick two choices that make complete and sensible sentences with similar meanings

2. Math Skills and Problem-Solving

In the math part of GRE 2024, you'll deal with basic math concepts and ways to solve problems using numbers. There will be two parts to the test, each with 20 questions about math topics like adding, algebra, shapes, and analyzing data. You'll have 35 minutes for each part.

GRE 2024 Quantitative Reasoning has four kinds of questions:

  • Compare: You'll compare two amounts and choose the best way to describe the comparison.
  • Choose One: Pick the right answer from five options.
  • Choose One or More: Choose more than one right answer from the options. You won't get points for partly right answers.
  • Type the number: Calculate and write the answers. You won't get options for these questions.

3. Expressing Thoughts in Writing

This part checks how well you think critically and write analytically. You'll read articles, essays, and such on everyday topics. There will be two writing tasks, each with its own 30-minute timer.

The two tasks are:

  • GRE Issue Analysis Task
  • GRE Argument Analysis Task
